The Garfagnana is an area within the northwest "panhandle" of Tuscany, a landscape of deep valleys and high Alps. Luxuriant meadows and thick forests climb from the river basins, reaching towards the tops of the mountains, among the highest in Central Italy. It is a region of profound silence, stupendous vistas, and remote alpine villages where a traditional, simpler life still holds true. Our Garfagnana trek takes you in a huge loop through this region, with nine full days of hiking. Rated as one of the top ten hikes in all of Europe, this is a trek for serious hikers trained for 6 to 8 hours of strenuous hiking each day, who don't mind staying in an occasional mountain refuge, but who also don't mind having their luggage transferred by vehicle each day. And your guide for the tour is a licensed trekking guide with a passionate knowledge of the outdoors and the region's wildlife. (Note: this is a guided tour only which requires a minimum of 4 participants.)
(Not included are airfare, wine and other beverages with alcohol, personal purchases such as laundry, phone calls, frigobar items etc., and anything not specifically included above.)

We had a real adventure and perhaps it was a bit too adventurous, it was very strenuous, two of the party who have been to Everest base camp from the Tibet side said that this walk was harder and Kathrin lost 5 toenails.
It was a wonderful experience, the mountains are truly spectacular, the food was great (and we really needed it) and the accommodation was fine, sometimes very basic and sometimes quite chic, my favourites were the refuges in the remote places.
We are having a reunion at my house when the Singers will be in Australia but those of us who have met here since the walk have all agreed that we wouldn't have missed it for anything.
